Awards Announced for UN Food and Agriculture Organisation


On June 12,2013 United Nations Food Agency The Food and Agriculture Organisation(FAO) announced its following awards.

These awards will be distributed on June 15,2013 at the start of 38th FAO Conference in Rome.

The Jacques Diouf Award(Jacques Diouf was a Senegalese diplomat who was Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) ) was given to the EU for its 'EU food Facility'.



It is an initialization that has benefited more than 59 million people in 49 developing countries by improving agricultural production of small farmers in response to high food prices.The EU shares the award with the Self-Employed Women's Association(SEWA) from India,which is being honored for its extreme efforts to lift poor women out of poverty and hunger.


Famous British newspaper the Gaurdian's Global development team received the Boerma Award for its reporting on agriculture,food security and poverty,with emphasis on achievement toward Millenium Development Goals.

The Edouard Saouma Award(Edouard Saouma was Director-General of Food and Agriculture Organisations) which is awarded to an institution that has efficiently implemented a project funded by FAO's Technical Cooperation Programme,it was awarded to Kenya Forest Service for its sustainable livelihood development project in the Mau forest complex,the largest indigenous mountane forest in East Africa.

The Organization del sector pesquero y acuicola del istmo centroamericano(fisheries and aquaculture sector of Central America) won the Margarita Lizarraga Medal 2012-13 for its significant contribution to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development for the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries in the Central American countries.

FAO also recognized outstanding contributions by three of its field officers,who received B.S. Sen Awards:

1. FAO project manager David Doolan kept FAO operations going through difficult conditions in Pakistan.

2. Senior Officer Patrick Drust was recognized for his 19 year career in the Asia-Pacific region.

3. Emergency Coordinator Luca Alinovi implemented innovative approaches to upscale operations in facing down Somalia
